Two Years of Repeat Orders, Then a Different Bag

The most useful review in the batch for understanding the low scores comes from Miss S Hull, a one-star reviewer who says she had bought this compost for over two years before something changed: "the first bag was the normal dark peat free soil I’ve always received, then my second order was a different bag." She says the second bag was "brown and full of peat" and that the seller insisted it was the same compost in new packaging. We can't verify what was in her order, but when a long-term repeat customer suddenly refuses to reorder, it tells you something about consistency.

She is not the only one describing a bag that missed expectations. Michael barry, another one-star buyer, says his delivery "was like wooden bark shavings than compost" (sic) and blames it for rotting his potatoes. Yet shell, a five-star first-time buyer, found precisely the opposite: "quite impressive soil seemed good quality to not full of sticks like the usual stuff" (sic). Budget composts are blended and bagged in runs, and the picture across these 100 reviews is that most runs come out dark, fine and consistent, while the occasional bag lands a long way from that standard. Keep that in mind as we go through the praise, because the praise is the much bigger pile.

The Case for It: Fine, Dark and Lump-Free, Say 75 of 100

Seventy-five of the 100 most recent UK reviews award five stars, and another ten give four. The praise is remarkably consistent about texture: eleven of the hundred call it out specifically, describing a mix that is fine, loose and free of the lumps and sticks that plague cheaper bags. "Good quality, fine grade, no lumps. Bought twice already," writes one Kindle Customer. Mary W. keeps it short: "Nice loose compost. Repotted plants love it." rosie is "really happy" that it's "not at all lumpy".

Results matter more than feel, and plants seem to respond. CAROLINE MITCHELL writes that her plants "always seem to do better" with it and reports a stronger crop of fruit and veg. The standout endorsement comes from scary mary, a prize-winning allotment holder: "I grow a lot of veg and 300 Dahlias plus annually this is the best compost i have come across in years" (sic). When someone raising hundreds of dahlias a year rates a budget multi purpose mix this highly, it carries more weight than a dozen generic thumbs-ups.

The water-retention claim on the bag, credited to blended-in vermiculite, also gets backing from the five-star column. "It holds water well and my plants are all thriving," says one buyer who specifically notes it "doesn't turn to dust when it is taken out of the bag". Which brings us to the buyers whose bags did exactly that.

Four of the Nine One-Star Reviews Describe the Same Fault

Among the nine one-star reviews in this sample, four describe the same specific failure: a powdery, flour-like bag that repels water instead of soaking it up. dancing girl reports "The texture is like flour and it seems like it's hydrophobic." Lesley lambert received "just powder with no substance to it" and watched water run straight off or sit in clumps. Rayner's bag was "like dust and didn’t absorb water easily but wanted to float", which ruled it out for seed trays. Add the Teflon comparison from the top of this page and that is a pattern, not a couple of cranks.

A related two-star report is worth reading before you pot up anything you love. Miss Helen Meiling bought two bags for houseplants she'd kept for years, liked the look and feel at first, then ended up with "dying plants encased in what I can only describe as compost concrete dispite watering far more often than I'd like" (sic). A powdery mix that sheds water when dry can also set hard once compacted in a pot, and her experience reads like the same underlying fault at a later stage.

If your bag pours out noticeably pale, dusty or feather-light, there is a partial fix: Rayner found the dodgy batch "Ok when mixed together with other compost". Pre-wetting helps too. Tip it into a trug, add warm water a splash at a time and work it through by hand until a squeezed handful just holds together. That rescues borderline bags. If water still beads and runs off after that, go through Amazon's return process rather than fighting it. On this sample the odds are heavily in your favour, but the worst bags aren't fixable with technique alone.

Compost Without the Car Boot

Read enough of these reviews and it becomes clear that many of Pelle & Sol's customers are buying delivery as much as compost. One repeat buyer posting as Lad puts it plainly: "I have purchased this several times, as it is too heavy for me to go to the garden centre to collect myself." Helen T Stevens agrees: "So much easier having heavy bags of compost delivered." Peter Humphrey liked having his "Delivered to my door free of charge and thus saving me a trip to the Garden centre." If you don't run a car, or heavy lifting is off the menu, that convenience is the entire pitch, and on the whole it lands.

The weak link is the courier. Twelve of the 100 reviews describe a delivery or fulfilment problem, several naming Evri. Mamgu gave two stars: "why bother having heavy products delivered if delivery driver doesn’t actually deliver to your door". Troominmamma still rated the compost five stars but reported it "delivered By Evri days late" after claimed delivery attempts the whole household, two barky dogs included, insists never happened. Fabio Suttle, who ordered the 100 litre option, gave two stars because "The soil is very good, but I ordered 100 litres and only got 50 litres delivered". A few others note that multi-bag orders arrived split across different days, so don't panic if half your order shows up first; Andrea Evans flags exactly that in an otherwise positive four-star review, and two reviewers mention the seller promptly chasing up missing bags.

The Bag-Size Maths Most Buyers Miss

One thing to know before leaning on any single review here: Amazon pools reviews across every size of this compost, from the 10 litre bag on this page up to 100 and 120 litre orders. Review titles in our sample mention 20L and 120L bags, and two buyers ordered 100 litres. So comments about heft, courier struggles and value do not all describe the 10L product; where a reviewer stated their bag size, we've flagged it.

The size question is also where the small bag takes its hardest knocks. sue, three stars, ordered it by mistake and did the sums: "The 10L size seems pointless when the larger sizes are so close in price , 75p extra to get double the amount" (sic). Lloyd S Robson went further, with a one-star "Absolutel rip off. Smallest bag of compost I have ever seen. Do not buy" (sic). Note that neither is complaining about the compost. Both are complaining about the arithmetic.

So size it sensibly. Ten litres fills roughly three or four small houseplant pots, or tops up a couple of patio containers. It suits a repotting session or windowsill growing, not borders or veg beds. If you're filling anything bigger, compare the price gap to the next size up before you order, because at the time these reviewers were writing, the jump was pennies. As a cheap first audition of the brand, though, the 10L bag is exactly the right purchase: enough to find out which texture camp your batch falls into without committing to 40 litres of it.

What the Bag Promises, and Where It Fits in a UK Garden

The listing pitches this as a do-it-all mix: N.P.K balanced with added nutrients, vermiculite blended in for moisture retention, and a Made in UK stamp on the bag. Pelle & Sol suggests three ways to use it: straight in pots for potting and repotting, mixed into garden soil to improve fertility and structure, and spread as a top dressing for feeding and mulching. The marketing covers everything from seed sowing to hanging baskets, flowers, veg and lawns.

The recent reviews mostly test the potting use, and that's where it shines. ellie2007 "potted my Begonia’s for the summer and a new olive tree" (sic) and found it exactly as described, and the houseplant crowd report smooth, easy repotting. For seed sowing I'd be more careful: the bag promotes healthy germination, but Rayner's dusty batch failed in seed trays, and any multi purpose compost benefits from sieving before it meets fine seed. For beds and borders, treat 10 litres as a soil improver for a single planting hole rather than a bed's worth of mulch. One isolated report deserves a mention: Ali Varey's one-star review says "This soil came full of weeds", with a photo. Nobody else in the hundred echoes it, so treat that as bad luck rather than a trend, but it did happen to one buyer.

Verdict: Four Stars, Sized for Small Jobs

The recent picture is slightly cooler than the lifetime 4.5-star headline, with our 100-review sample averaging 4.39, but that is still a strong scoreline for a budget compost, and three quarters of recent buyers are completely satisfied. Our own rating: four out of five. The bag most people receive is dark, fine and lump-free, plants visibly do well in it, and doorstep delivery solves a real problem for anyone who can't lug sacks home from a garden centre.

The risks are real but minority ones. Four buyers in a hundred got a powdery, water-repelling batch, a dozen hit courier or fulfilment snags, and the 10L bag only makes financial sense for small jobs. Buy this size to audition the brand for houseplants, repotting and container top-ups, pre-wet the compost if it pours out dusty, and step up to a bigger bag once you've seen what arrives.
