When to stop feeding pond fish in the UK (and the temperature that settles it)
Autumn is when most people start asking, but a pond does not read a calendar. Here is the water temperature that settles it, the fish behaviour that confirms it, and what the job looks like from September to March.

When to stop feeding pond fish in the UK is decided by water temperature, not the calendar. Take a reading about 30cm down: below roughly 10C, switch from a high-protein staple to a wheatgerm food, and below roughly 4 to 6C, stop feeding altogether. In most gardens that falls somewhere in late October and November.
For most UK ponds the moment lands in the second half of October, roughly when an average English pond crosses 10C. But roughly covers a fortnight either side, and a shallow pond outside Aberdeen gets there long before a deep one in Cornwall. The date starts the conversation; a reading settles it.
What to check before the next feed
Two observations do the work here, and neither costs anything beyond a thermometer: the water at depth, and what the fish do when food hits the surface.
Water temperature, taken properly
Fish are cold-blooded, so their digestion runs at whatever speed the water allows. That makes water temperature the only number worth acting on and air temperature misleading: a bright October afternoon can read 16C in the air above a pond sitting at 9C.
Use a floating pond thermometer or a digital probe on a cable, read it about 30cm down rather than at the surface, and take it at the same time each morning. One cold morning below 10C is weather; four or five in a row is the season changing.
What the fish are doing
The fish give a second opinion worth as much as the thermometer. In warm water they come up fast and hunt for what they missed. As it cools they rise more slowly, take less, and eventually look at the food and turn away.
Feed a pinch and watch the clock. Gone in a couple of minutes means digestion is still working; pellets floating after five means that feed was one too many. Torpid is not ill, either: a fish hanging low in December, upright and unmarked with its gills barely moving, is doing what it is built to do. A fish gasping at the surface, lying on one side or holding its fins clamped tight has a different problem, and feeding will not fix it.
Ponds cool at different speeds
Two ponds in the same street can sit 3C apart in November, because volume buys the lag rather than surface area. Below about 45cm deep, expect every threshold earlier than general guidance suggests, and bigger swings between a mild afternoon and a frosty night.
Goldfish, koi and sturgeon
Goldfish, shubunkins and koi behave closely enough that one set of thresholds covers them, though koi are sometimes given a slightly higher stopping point because a bigger fish takes longer to clear its gut.
Sturgeon are the exception that matters. They keep feeding at temperatures where goldfish have shut down, they need a specialist sinking food rather than floating sticks, and one left to fast can lose condition badly. Treat everything here as the goldfish and koi answer, and take separate advice for sturgeon.
Month by month, September to March
These months describe an average year in the middle of England. Mild coastal and south-western gardens run two to three weeks later, north-east Scotland two to three weeks earlier, and any single year can shift the sequence by a fortnight. Use the month to know what to expect, the thermometer to decide.
September
Nothing changes yet in most ponds, which is worth saying plainly because September is when people start asking. The water is usually in the mid teens and every mouthful is the reserve that carries the fish to March. Feed normally.
Do the jobs that make the rest of it easier: get a thermometer into the water, net the pond before the leaves fall, and cut back marginal foliage about to collapse into it. October
The month it usually happens. An average English pond falls through the low teens and crosses 10C in the last week or so. Cut amount and frequency as the readings drop: twice a day becomes once a day, then every other day as you approach 10C. Once the mornings are consistently under 10C, move to a wheatgerm food and keep the leaf net on.
November
For most UK ponds this is where feeding stops. The water typically starts around 7 to 9C and finishes near 4 to 6C, so the wheatgerm phase is short and the last feed of the year lands somewhere in the middle. Feed only in the milder first half, around midday, and only what clears in two or three minutes. Once the morning reading sits at 4 to 6C, stop. Service the filter now, not in January.
December
No feeding in almost any UK pond: the water sits between about 2 and 6C, the fish are torpid near the bottom, and digestion has effectively halted. Keep a small area clear of ice so gases can escape, lift the pump off the bottom or switch it off so it is not dragging the warmest layer to the surface, and pull out leaves that got past the net.
January
The coldest water of the year, often 1 to 4C, and nothing to do about food at all. Check the pond after a hard freeze. A few days of ice is survivable; ice under a thick lid of snow for a fortnight causes losses, because the light is cut off along with the air.
February
Still no feeding in most gardens, and this is where north and south part company: a mild late February in Cornwall can hold a shallow pond above 8C for a week while an Aberdeenshire pond is frozen over. Start reading daily again from mid month and watch for the fish to come off the bottom.
March
The restart month, and the one where people rush. Once the water has held above about 8C for several days and the fish are moving, offer a very small amount of wheatgerm every couple of days. Return to a staple only when readings settle in double figures, usually April: a warm March week followed by a cold snap leaves food in a pond whose filter is still half asleep.
Winding the food down, step by step
1. Get a reading you can trust
A floating pond thermometer is the only tool this job needs, and there is no substitute: a greenhouse or air thermometer measures the air, and a weather app is further away. Read it about 30cm down, in the morning, away from the pump outflow, and note it for a week before changing anything.
2. Watch one feed properly
Offer a pinch, far less than you think, and time it. Anything uneaten after five minutes comes out with a net rather than being left to sink, because what sinks in October is still there in December.
3. Step the staple food down
Through summer a pond on a staple stick food such as Tetra Pond Fish Food Sticks may be fed two or three times a day, so the first move is simply less of it: once a day through the low teens, then every other day as you approach 10C, halving the quantity as you go.
Be clear about what a staple is. Sticks like these are a high-protein summer and early autumn food and this step is where you taper off them. They are not a cold-water formula and should not be carried into the cold as though they were.
4. Change to a wheatgerm food below 10C
Below about 10C a fish's gut slows to the point where high-protein food sits in it undigested for days. That is the reason for the change rather than anything magic in wheat: wheatgerm foods are lower in protein and break down at low temperatures. Feed them around midday, when the water is at its daily peak and hours of daylight remain for digestion.
Not everyone is convinced. Some keepers hold that wheatgerm is a marketing distinction and that quantity and protein level are the only variables that matter. We would still use it, because low protein is precisely what is being sold, and buying the right food beats rationing the wrong one.
5. Stop below 4 to 6C
Once the morning reading sits between 4 and 6C, stop. The range is wide because keepers do not agree: some stop at 8C, some carry a pinch of wheatgerm down to 4C, and a few feed lightly all winter in a deep, heavily filtered pond. If you want one number, 5C is defensible. Stopping a week early costs the fish nothing; stopping a week late can cost you the water.
6. Do the jobs that replace feeding
Net the leaves out before they sink and put what you take out on the heap; our guide to making leaf mould from autumn leaves covers the pile. Cut back dying marginal and oxygenating plants, and clean the filter while the water is workable. From here the fish are looked after by water quality rather than by food.
What goes wrong, and how to recover
Uneaten food fouling the water
This is the failure that actually kills fish over winter, and it is not hunger. Food left in cold water breaks down and releases ammonia at exactly the moment the nitrifying bacteria in the filter have slowed with everything else, so nothing is left working to process it. Below about 10C those bacteria run at a fraction of their summer rate, and near 5C they have all but stopped.
Recover by netting out everything visible, stopping feeding, and changing 10 to 20 percent of the volume with dechlorinated water. Test for ammonia if you keep a kit, and do not change a large volume at once, which shocks fish that are already cold.
Feeding on the one mild afternoon
A mild spell in December lifts the surface, the fish come up, and it reads as hunger when it is often just movement. The risk is food going into a gut about to drop back to 4C overnight. Keepers disagree and both positions are defensible; the cautious line, and the one we would follow, is that once you have stopped for the year you stay stopped unless the water holds above the threshold for several days running.
Worrying that the fish are starving
They are not. Pond fish are adapted to fast through winter on reserves laid down in late summer, and a healthy fish entering November in good condition comes out the other side thinner but fine. The case worth attention is a pond of small, young fish after a poor summer, and even then the answer is feeding them properly in August and September, not in January.
Ice, and what not to do about it
Never smash ice on a pond with fish in it, because the shockwave travels through the water and can injure them. Stand a pan of hot water on the surface until it melts through, or float a ball overnight so lifting it out leaves a hole, then keep that gap open.

Koi follow broadly the same thresholds, though some keepers stop a little higher because a larger fish takes longer to clear its gut. Sturgeon do not: they stay active in cold water, need a specialist sinking food, and can lose condition badly if treated like goldfish.
